Careys are constructing impressive new facilities and infrastructure at the University of Glasgow campus, carrying out four substantial superstructure and substructure contracts – including a five-storey concrete civil structure with a basement. Additional works we’ll be delivering include pile caps, drainage, retaining walls and three large cores.
In this latest package of works awarded we have been contracted to construct the University of Glasgow’s new Research Hub, a multi-level laboratory facility. This five-storey concrete civil structure with a basement has been specifically designed to provide state-of-the-art facilities for 600 PhD students, academics and postdoctoral researchers.

Constructing the UK’s most expansive virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) lab
The building will house one of the UK’s most expansive virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) labs, a post-graduate researcher area with more than 50 workstations and a host of seminar and meeting rooms. The key feature of the Research Hub is its spacious, soaring atrium that will serve as a public exhibition and conference space.
Our teams were responsible for providing pile caps, drainage, retaining walls and three large cores – two of which were jumped and one of which involved floor-to-floor construction.
In addition, we successfully completed a two-year project to create the university’s Learning and Teaching Hub and we have recently been awarded an infrastructure contract.
Our scope of works on the infrastructure project – which is spread across 14 acres – involves:
− Groundworks
− Deep drainage
− Excavations
− New road construction
− Hard landscaping, including the installation of paving, granite sets and granite kerbs
Most recently, we started work on a new project to help build the Institute of Health and Wellbeing – making this the fourth contract to date that we have been awarded at the University of Glasgow. We are tasked with providing the RC pilecaps, drainage, ground floor slab and structural toppings.
