Careys have delivered the conversion of the existing British Home Stores into a Primark store at the Oracle Shopping Centre in Reading. The 10-month project included structural and fabric alterations, a cut and carve package, concrete slab of the foundation, brickwork and screed, façade removal as well as slab re-installment.
As a part of the works our in-house design team produced a complex temporary works design prior to the project commencement. The project presented several site constraints, that were acknowledged and addressed as part of the pre-contract planning. Notably working in the centre of Reading within a live public shopping area, there was no parking and no hoist access. Various measures were put in place to mitigate disturbance from detailed logistics planning through the use of grab lorries and utlising a crane.
To mitigate disturbing the neighbouring Oracle Shopping Centre and surrounding residents, sound monitoring was put in place for six months and a Section 61 was applied for. The site team were able to reduce the quantity of Rockwall used for soundproofing through the use of monitoring instead of hiring soundproofing pads. We successfully delivered the project on time and safely, winning Health and Safety Awards from Mace for three consecutive months.
