The Garnock Academy Campus merged a primary school and nursery with the new look academy and leisure centre, accommodating over 1,500 students and providing valuable community amenities. Careys were awarded a 63-week contract that entails the groundworks, substructure, drainage, services and external landscaping and surfacing works.
Prior to commencing construction, our team was responsible for the removal of 58,000m3 of earth. We were subsequently responsible for construction of the superstructure and its foundations including three suspended post-tensioned slabs, six concrete cores and the installation of precast stairs.
Alongside these superstructure works we constructed a substructure that will house the swimming pool. The slabs, cores and columns required a high-quality, type B finish on all exposed concrete areas. Our team was also awarded the hard landscaping package that included the car park, drainage and street furniture.
Key to our success on this project was the planning phase and the adaptability of the operations team. We worked with a land surveyor on the groundworks to decide the most appropriate methods to remove and store the earth, concluding that this should be stored in bunds around the site for reuse later in the project.
Poor weather conditions, exacerbated by the site’s location in an exposed area presented a potential for programme delays, but we were able to re-phase the programme to accommodate this and completed the works on time.
As part of our submission we successfully demonstrated the ability to deliver classrooms with exposed soffits requiring a plywood layout and internal walls exposed within stair cores.
