Coal Drops Yard
Careys was contracted to partially demolish the structures at Coal Drops Yard, adjacent to King’s Cross Station, London. Our scope of work included the installation of temporary support for the structural retention of external walls. This was critical to facilitate the demolition of internal walls and roof removal, partial demolition of East Viaduct over the live Thames Water sewer main and removal of internal flooring.

BAM ConstructThe site, consisting of two Grade II listed structures, was converted into retail and open-air performance spaces as part of the regeneration of the station and is constrained by tight site boundaries.
Careys in-house design team was critical for the facilitation of the project, designing a bespoke methodology and sustainable action plan to ensure historical features of the building were preserved.

The complexity of the temporary works required extensive evaluation based on the current conditions of the structure and an analysis of the quantity of roofing which needed to be replaced for successful completion of the works.
As part of our sustainable action plan, our team salvaged all structural elements that were removed through demolition and deconstruction of the site. Having previously carried out significant works on buildings of historic importance, we were able to identify the historic value of many elements and re-used these in the refurbishment and construction works of the site.
