Careys delivered a package of enabling, infrastructure, substructure and superstructure works – one rises to 10 storeys and the other to seven storeys, at Atlantic Square in the centre of Glasgow.
Glasgow continues to cement its reputation as an up-and-coming destination for UK and international trade. Part of the reason that Glasgow started to become a soughtafter business location was its decision, in 2001, to establish the International Financial Services District (IFSD), which now serves as a central base for many key financial service companies. Some of these well-known firms that have set up their headquarters in the IFSD include JP Morgan and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC).
A new regional hub for HMRC
The new 300,000ft2 Atlantic Square commercial development is situated in the very centre of Glasgow’s thriving IFSD. It consists of two superstructures – one rises to 10 storeys and the other to seven storeys. One of the towers will provide offices for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the other will offer leased commercial space.
Our scope of works includes the provision of:
• Reinforced concrete foundations
• Under-slab drainage works
• A waterproof basement
• Three slipformed cores
• Two post-tensioned, reinforced concrete frames
• 20,000m3 of concrete
• 2,400 tonnes of rebar
• 40,000m2 of falsework
• − Precast stairs
• − Hard landscaping
By carrying out our customarily detailed and thorough planning processes, we were able to efficiently overcome a number of challenges at Atlantic Square. This included managing site logistics in a tight, urban environment, working safely with existing live services, such as BT lines from neighbouring buildings, and dealing with a complex frame design, caused by having an elevated, 6m-high first floor.
