For the construction of a new library, our team completed the ground floor slab, concrete cores, retaining walls and suspended slabs, in addition to constructing in-situ reinforced concrete basement walls, columns, podium deck and two nine-storey cores (both containing nine cells) resulting in 3,000m3 of concrete being poured. The columns, soffit and core concrete are all exposed faces.
The University of Aberdeen, established in 1495, is the fifth oldest English-language university in the world. The concrete works we delivered on the new superstructure comprised more than 15,000m2 of floorspace that would host over a quarter of a million books, maps and manuscripts, as well as 1,200 reader spaces in a variety of environments where cutting edge technologies are available.
Additionally, special libraries and archives offer historical collections in connection to a secure rare books reading room. The new library is staffed by 60 staff and serves a community of over 16,000 students.
