With sustainability an increasingly visible and important issue for the construction industry, many contractors are working to find new solutions to reduce the negative impact on the environment. As specialist subcontractors, Carey Group companies often have limited scope for advising on design or material specifications, but operationally are less constrained in our ability to reduce carbon emissions, water and electricity use.

Careys Foundation’s volunteering initiative provides each Carey Group employee with an opportunity to volunteer for a charity of their choice. Last month employees took on Volunteers' Week where they devoted time towards a range of different charitable causes.

Running a construction site in a busy urban environment is always a challenge, but constructing a 30-metre-deep basement in the middle of one is even harder. Traditional excavation requires space; long-reach excavators can span up to ten metres when fully extended and heaped earth further reduces the limited operational space.

During the month of May at 60 Curzon Street, Careys Civil Engineering teamed with Balfour Beatty and lived our Careys Foundation values by making a difference within local communities. They made a positive impact towards the homeless in their kitchen take over at The Passage, Victoria.

Carey Group’s new Soil Engineering Plant represents a true Group achievement, being made possible through the investment of Careys Plant & Fleet. The Plant is operated under the Seneca Resource Recovery permit, deployed on the Scudder Demolition Ford Dagenham site and managed by the Carey Group materials manager. The plant is capable of remediating all types of material excavated by Careys Civil Engineering.

We’re passionate about the future pioneers of the construction industry and last month saw Careys Civil Engineering devoting time to develop forthcoming young engineers. Members of the team shared valuable knowledge with university students studying built environment courses at the annual Constructionarium event.

In 2016, the Carey Group invested in six new tower cranes to further enhance our self-delivery capability. Supported by Careys Plant & Fleet, the tower cranes are currently deployed on two projects being undertaken by Careys Civil Engineering – Manchester New Square and Wembley Park.

Careys Foundation are thrilled and proud to support Louie Lynn, the rising boxing talent who had a fanatic kick start to his career live at the 02 Arena in March.

Careys are proud to announce that the first of their new homes at Southill, Limerick are ready for occupation. After working closely with ABK Architects who acted as lead consultants for the client, Limerick City and County Council, the team has delivered a unique and demanding design within the constraints of public works cost limits.

Setting a phenomenal example this month, Careys Civil Engineering took on sustainability at Graven Hill, Bicester with a new and intuitive approach, through an ecological awareness training day. It was a fantastic opportunity for the site team and local primary school students to learn about the importance of protecting the surrounding environment, and the unique birds near the project.

In January, Careys Civil Engineering were delighted to officially hand over the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum, Dundee to client BAM Construction.
