Careys Civil Engineering has been awarded an enabling package of works to help transform the former coal-fired Lostock power station in Northwich, Cheshire into an energy-efficient, eco-friendly energy from waste (EfW) facility.
Former Lostock Power Station
In 2000, when it closed its doors for good, the Lostock power station was one of the UK’s last remaining coal-driven plants . It then sat abandoned and unused for years.
Over a decade later, in 2012, Tata Chemicals Europe and Eon Energy from Waste sought and received planning permission from the Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to construct and operate a 60MW EfW generation station.
Supplying energy to 125,000 homes annually
Once completed, the new EfW plant will generate enough energy to power approximately 125,000 homes per year. It will accomplish this by cleanly converting residual waste – materials that are not re-usable or recyclable – into energy.
Not only will the new Lostock facility provide power to properties throughout the region, it will also contribute further to sustainability by diverting a substantial amount of waste from landfill.
Careys broad scope of works
In keeping with our unique self-delivery model – which enables us to offer a wide spectrum of specialist construction solutions – fellow Carey Group companies, ION Environmental and Scudder Demolition, will also support our delivery of works for the Lostock EfW plant.
Collectively, some of the services that we will be contributing to this environmentally important project include:
We are scheduled to complete our current scope of works in mid-2020 – with the entire project targeting a completion date of 2023.
